How the OU Golf Classic Drives Impact

On a crisp Monday morning in early September, the R&S Sharf Golf Course comes to life. The sun peeks over the trees as golf carts line up, laughter fills the air as supporters and friends from near and far gather for more than just a round of golf — they gather for a purpose.

On September 8, 2025, the annual Oakland University Golf Classic will be in full swing. Presented by the School of Business Administration and the College of Arts and Sciences, the event brings together alumni, faculty, community partners and friends on OU’s very own championship course. Designed by legendary architect Rick Smith, the Sharf Course is both stunning and demanding, a perfect metaphor for the journey students take toward becoming leaders.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with registration and warm-ups. By Noon, a shotgun start sends groups across the 18-hole, par-72 course that winds through OU’s scenic Rochester campus. Some are seasoned players, others are there for the camaraderie. But all are united in their support for OU students. Every swing, putt and cheer from the fairway helps fund student experiences that go beyond the classroom: global learning opportunities, hands-on projects and technology that shape tomorrow’s business professionals.

“As a community, we’re not just investing in a fun day of golf, we’re investing in transformational opportunities for our students,” said Alexandria DeSano-Salvaggio, director of philanthropy for the School of Business Administration. “The Golf Classic is a meaningful way to connect people who believe in the power of education and want to be part of something bigger.”

As the sun dips lower, the day winds down with the Afterglow Reception. Golfers trade stories over food and drinks, reflecting on the game and the cause. It’s a celebration, not just of sport, but of community, generosity and the future.

Some will leave with prizes, others with sunburns. But everyone leaves knowing they played a part in something bigger.
